Oh Lush, I am dissapoint

Today, I decided that I was going to treat my self to some Lush shower jelly; the sweetie pie one to be exact. I had been eyeing it up for a while (it smells and feels gorgeous) and today I decided to take the plunge. Instead of luxurious shower products, I found latent homophobia in the form of a description:

“Fruitier than Dale Winton…”

I was shocked. Lush, “the ethical company” using homophobic descriptions (because last time I heard Fruit is a slur), I was genuinely disappointed.

So me being the big mouth I am, I’ve sent an email.

Dear Lush Team,

I am writing in regards to the description used on the 100g pot of Sweetie Pie Jelly. It currently reads as “fruitier than Dale Winton” and I was both shocked and appalled to read such homophobic sentiments on a  Lush product. As a company that prides itself on it’s ethical company policies and produce, I was surprised that this was viewed as acceptable. I also query whether Dale Winton is aware his name is being used in such a manner.
I am sure that there is no harm intended with this sentence, but it is not so much about intent of the statement as it is about the hurtful nature of such a comment. Children and adults are still bullied and discriminated against for their sexual orientations worldwide and it is naive to assume that such a problem does not exist in the UK; because only when such discrimination is abolished will such a joke be seen as acceptable.
As a loyal customer of Lush products, I am genuinely disappointed in the company and it has certainly caused me to question whether I want to spend money on your products. I look forward to hearing your responses to my concerns.
What does everyone think?
