Consent and the elderly population.

I’m writing this post as a nurse. Apologies if your not interested in nursey things, but I’m angry, confused and I want to write. the topic is concerning consent in the elderly population, focusing on their consent to be filmed and photographed and for those images to then be distributed.

This post comes from reading the Guardian today, reading this story. I want to issue a massive trigger warning for trauma if you click on the link, the picture is horrific. For those who do not want to read the story it’s about a 94year old lady, Emma, who was savagely beaten to a bloody pulp by some cowardly, despicable thug/s. Sadly, Emma passed away today and her killers have not been found. I could wax lyrical about all the problems in this story, about my love for the elderly (they are probably one of my favourite patient groups to nurse) and about how I truly cannot fathom how anyone could do this to another human being. But I’m not and instead I’m going to talk about the horrible photograph that has been paraded for the whole wide world and it’s sister to see.

It’s a truly harrowing picture and I am in no doubt that the police thought it served a purpose by publicizing it (seeming not in catching the killers though?), but I really want to know if Emma was in any fit state to consent to that picture being shown. Now maybe her relatives gave consent on behalf of her (although this isn’t really okay unless Emma had a mental health problem that deemed her unable to consent) but I wonder if that’s how Emma wants to be remembered? As the frail old woman who was unable to defend herself?

A couple of months back there was a documentary on channel four, which was a fly on the wall documentary about being a nurse. I really enjoyed it (it was nice to see something from a nurses perspective) but one thing that did not sit well with me was the often elderly patients that were shown on camera. One lady was badly hurt from a query abuse case, another gentleman had dementia and was wandering around the ward, one gentleman has passed urine and needed assistance to get clean and dry, etc, etc. I have to query if any of these patients gave true consent to be shown on television, for the whole world to see. I know from personal experience when I interviewed Ed Millaband, that I did not give consent to be photographed and yet my picture ended up in the daily mail.

To me, this links in with the utter contempt that the media and society shows the elderly as a population. No-one wants to get old, do they? Because we are told by everything around us that being old will be bad and humiliating. The elderly are often framed as a burden, as weak, feeble people who are unable to stand up from them selves. Or as stupid old biddys that just wander around and pee themselves. Or as people with dementia who are to confused to live on their own. People who are elderly are not seen as people who have their own agency, their own thoughts, feelings or dreams. They’re seen as passive and placid, instead of individuals with rights.

Which is why consent within the elderly population is always something I question. Because I recognise that people who are elderly are people who might not want to be framed in such negative, demeaning ways. But do the reporters, the media and news outlets that want a good story recognise that?

[image description: a white woman with night cream on her face is pulling a strange face at the camera]

All I need now is someone to scream “racist” at me for doing “white face” HA.

“This one is very serious, guys:
I came upon these two on the sidewalk. They were having a conversation. “Excuse me,” I said, addressing the girl: “I’m sorry to interrupt, but is there anyway I can take your photo?”
“Why would you want my photo?” she asked.
“Because you look beautiful,” I said. And she did. She was Sudanese. There is a very distinct beauty among people from the Sudan, and she was filled up with it. Suddenly the man cut in:
“I was just telling her she was beautiful,” he said.
Naively, I assumed I had just walked up on one stranger giving a compliment to another. I wanted to capture the moment. “Let me take your photograph together,” I said. The man seemed reluctant, he started smiling nervously and inching away. But the girl called him back.
“Come take a picture with me,” she said. Encouraged by her attention, he returned. She put her arm around him, and I took the photo.
As I examined the photos on my camera, the man started whispering to the girl. She answered him in a loud voice: “I told you! I’m not that kind of girl.” She seemed agitated now. Finally sensing that I had misread the situation, I stepped between them. The man began hurrying down the sidewalk.
When the man left, the girl’s demeanor changed completely. She seemed shaken. Her eyes were tearing up. “He just offered me five hundred dollars to go out with him,” she said. “And then when I said ‘no,’ he offered me one thousand. Why does this always happen to me?”
“It happens a lot?” I asked.
“All the time,” she said. “I’m sorry I’m getting emotional. I just can’t go out of my house without this kind of thing happening. I have a son. I’m a mother. I would never degrade myself like that. I just don’t understand why this keeps happening.”
“Do you mind if I tell this story?” I asked.
“Please,” she said. “Tell it.”
Let’s hope this man, and all men, realize the emotional damage they are inflicting on the women they try to buy. In the meantime, feel free to SHARE.*
Dear Tumblr, fuck you for trying to erase this.

I’m saving this post because as many times as Tumblr tries to erase this woman’s story and act like anything about this was okay, that’s as many times as I’m reposting it. They can either cut me off or stop being assnuggets about this. whichEVER.

i will always reblog this. because if this woman were white, the mass-erasure of this image and story would not be happening. and that just speaks volumes to me. the bigotry that contributes to this woman’s constant harassment is the same bigotry that led to the erasure of this story in order to ‘protect’ this man. they are COMPLETELY connected. this is a vicious cycle that perpetuates anti-blackness and the degradation and silencing of black women and women of color as a whole.

oh look trubr0wn just deployed more truth bombs.

i am the truth bomb terrorist.

FUCK YOU TUMBLR. I will reblog this every god damn twelve hours. You will NOT erase this woman’s story just because HONY is a bigot who is full of shit. Tumblr staff is full of shit. They are ALL full of shit. And fuck every single one of you shitty people for thinking that you’re going to win. You will NOT.
Hey this disappeared off my tumblr how strange
anyway, here it is again, supporting this lovely lady who has to put up with this crap just because she exists and goes outside, and to call shame on a society that would actually force her to put her arm around the creep who just upped his price after she told him that she wouldn’t whore for him
Here it is, calling attention to the FACT that the aggressor, the perpetrator of this outrage was the one protected, and the victim is just supposed to disappear
To that I say no

Open season on Black women is OVER.

I’m going to back up my Tumblr.
But I just want to see if Tumblr will ignore the e-mail I just wrote to them getting unwanted messages by users I’ve told to leave me alone and will send me another e-mail about “violating copyright,” if not try to delete my blog for reblogging this picture and story that needs to be seen and heard.
I’m not claiming ownership of anything, BTW.  Picture, story behind the picture, and the erasure of the picture copyrighted2012 by humansofnewyork.tumblr.com .  And reblogging this picture has an educational reason behind it — to show how black women are dehumanized, and then silenced if they ever speak out.

Tumblr deleted this post from everyone’s blog. Here it is again. And people have saved copies to their computers, including me. Story’s not going away. The internet is forever.

Anonymous asked: I've begun self-medicating to treat my depression. I'm taking 200mg of modafinil each morning. So far, it's amazing. The change is SO noticeable. It's like someone has unblocked my ears, cleared my vision, and rinsed my brain through to get rid of the crap clogging it up. I feel like I could climb the highest mountain and punch the face of God. Two days thus far. It's been like I've taken felix felicis each morning.

I don’t want to put you off, but seriously, you should NEVER EVER self medicate. EVER EVER. We got that? Great

I’m glad this medicine is working for you, but you need to go to your GP and tell them what your doing. This is ad drug that cause some serious side effects, that include high blood pressure (if your known hypotensive you have to have an ECG before you go on it), depression and mania. I mean, Modanfinil is not even a drug they usually use to treat depression.

Like I get it, I know what it’s like to have depression and desperately want to get better. But you should never ever self medicate and use other peoples drugs. Go to your GP and talk to them about your depression and demand the correct medication. Have it on a sheet of paper in your records so if something happens to you then people will know what meds your on.

Didn’t think I’d ever actually get a job interview to be a nurse, but here we are :D

I’m going to log out of Tumblr and change my password to random letters, so I can get some work done.

Don’t worry, I was as surprised as the rest of you that you can actually log out of Tumblr.
